Welcome to Just Media. We’re a national hub telling a new story about justice—and supporting the next generation of storytellers.

In the current moment, we’re seeing years of grassroots power-building coming to a head—with the uprisings, movements to defund and abolish carceral systems, voting rights restoration for 100,000s of formerly incarcerated people, referendums on DAs, and more.

At the heart of our work, we ask: What if the story being told in the media matched the one being told in the streets? And what if young, directly impacted, movement-aligned writers were the ones to cover it?

For young people, especially young people of color, these are the issues that define our generation. Teen Vogue found that 88% of young voters see criminal justice reform as a priority for elected officials. A full two-thirds of young Black voters say candidates’ stances on these issues has an influence on their vote.

Just Media is building a network of writers and cultural organizers who represent communities at the center of justice politics. Through our fellowship cohort model, we provide the training and mentorship that’s needed for robust, ear-to-the-ground storytelling. Additionally, we provide media training to frontline organizers who are looking to take their stories to wider audiences.

Together, we’re committed to telling a story in the media that’s as vibrant, inclusive, and visionary as the one being told in the streets.

Now accepting applications for our 2023-2024 Fellowships! Your voice matters in the media landscape. Apply now and be the storyteller that sparks change!

These are our stories to tell:

Since our founding in 2020, we’ve hosted four fellowship cohorts, supporting 42 writers from 27 cities across the country. Across these cohorts, more than 90% of fellows are Black or brown writers ages 18-24. We encourage you to read what young people have to say about prison, police, and justice.

“The fellowship opened my eyes to how important my role as a journalist and writer is. I loved being able to work with grassroots organizations and allowing them to tell their stories. It was inspiring talking to people who do important on-the-ground work and highlight the amazing things they’ve been able to accomplish.”

“Now that I have established connections with the Just Media team, my cohort of fellows, and editors at multiple progressive news outlets, I look forward to following up on my piece later this year as the participatory budgeting process continues. It is so important for stories to be told by those who are directly impacted by the issues being reported on. I look forward to continuing my advocacy for movement journalism at this critical social moment.”

“The thing that I've enjoyed most about my Just Media Fellowship experience is being able to meet other people all over the country with a common goal. I'm thankful because it made me realize once again how important representation is, no matter how small.”
Anna Deogratias, Phoenix
